Day 13 was notable for a couple of things. One of them was Chris MacDonald’s workshop on first aid at the DREAM Project’s school.

Just look at him doing his final preparations!

Day 11 – it’s almost over

Day 11 gave us a chance to see some completely opposite sides of life in the DR. It started at a village where illegal Haitian immigrants live. They came or were brought to DR to work on the sugarcane fields. But the industry is dying, and these people don’t have jobs, money or decent living conditions.

Upon return to Cabarete we did some more workshops, including my workshop on blogging, and Guillermo’s workshop on car maintenance.

At the end of the day we enjoyed a free concert on the beach, with performances by Soulibre (Free Spirit) and world-famous breakdance crew Havikoro. Not only those guys did a great show, but they gave some local talents a chance to perform on the stage with them, including some of the DREAM school students.

Dominican Republic – Day 9 – schools and breakdance

leave a comment »

Day 9 started with a visit to El Jardin de los Ninos school. The school is run by one woman, Pauline Tremblay, 71, and she has been running it for 25 years. She is absolutely amazing at what she does. She also adopted 32 children, some of who grew up to become teacher at that school. Spectacular.

Later in the day we had several workshops at DREAM school, where we also saw Houston breakdancers Havikoro Crew give some dance lessons. So many different people come here to DR, trying to improve the life of these people by any means they can. It’s something I’ve never seen before. It’s great.
