My first photography class in college hasn't started yet. I only know how to take pictures in auto function and Photoshop is still a mystery.

Christmas at my brother’s

Black light, dinner, gifts and poker – a perfect combination.

No need for fancy stuff. One lamp, some coloured threads and lots of paper do the job.

I did it.

Today was the day. I was preparing for this for a long time. As usual, it turned out that the hardest thing was actually getting up and finally doing it.

Papers. Photo/Aleksejs Nesterins

I sorted out all handouts, printouts, assignments, notes, designs, tests, big and small papers that I’ve been saving for almost a year and a half, which is a half of my journalism program at Centennial College. It took me only about 20 minutes. I ended up throwing out a huge pile of papers and saving just two folders of all non-textbook material that I had.

What did I save? I saved all my course outlines. Why? When I looked at them, I couldn’t even remember some of the courses that I took over this time. The best thing about the course outline is that it contains a brief summary of all the stuff that this course is supposed to cover. I thought it might be fun to look at them in about five years, when I completely lose any memory of my studies. I saved the big photocopied excerpts from books that we couldn’t cover in full. I haven’t even looked some of them, so my next big plan is finding out if they have anything inside them that I could put to use.

I also saved some of my marked works. Now, I have all the stuff that I’ve written saved in digital format right here on my laptop. The criteria for saving hard copies of this stuff was the presence of useful instructors’ comments, suggestions and notes on top of my work.

And then I threw out everything else. Was all of it complete garbage? Of course not. Without having that stuff in the first place, I wouldn’t have any idea now how to write a simple story. But I don’t need it anymore. Most of what I need is in my head. Some in my other notes. This is exactly what I love about education. You learn, and the quality of that learning is not measured in miles of papers, or the hours spent in front of the computer screen or listening to all those lectures. It’s the effect that it has upon you. And for that effect, thank you Centennial.
